360° panoramas let you show a space or product with unusual honesty. A customer sees the office, showroom, or production floor — not a polished illustration, but the real environment. The choice of technology is therefore also an ethical decision.
Free solutions: Marzipano and WordPress plugins
Marzipano is an open-source library that lets you embed 360° images on a website for free. WordPress plugins can also add panoramas through a visual editor.
What they provide:
- Zero software cost
- Basic embedding without complex interaction
- Customization when a developer is available
What they usually do not provide out of the box:
- Brand-ready interface design
- Built-in accessibility support (ADA/WCAG)
- Rich interactive elements such as hotspots, maps, and video
- Professional support
Free tools are a construction kit. You can build with them, but the result often still looks like a construction kit unless significant design and development work is added.
💡 Insight: Free tools give you a panorama. They do not automatically give you an experience. The user may see a 360° image, but not a branded environment with thoughtful navigation, guidance, and identity.
Our choice: professional virtual-tour platforms
We use professional virtual-tour software designed for architectural, educational, and corporate projects. It is typically purchased as software rather than treated as a recurring design subscription.
What this gives us:
- Brand consistency. Buttons, menus, hotspots, and other interface elements can follow the brand book.
- Interactivity. Maps, video, galleries, links, and guided routes can be integrated into the experience.
- Accessibility (ADA/WCAG). Keyboard navigation, screen-reader support, and captions can be planned into the tour.
- Professional result. The tour feels like a finished product rather than a technical demo.
The point is not a specific software brand. The point is choosing a tool that lets us control the experience, accessibility, and visual system rather than merely display a spherical image.
JavaScript in professional solutions: what it adds
A professional tour is not only a “panorama viewer.” A JavaScript API lets us add functionality beyond standard settings.
With JavaScript we can:
- Control components. Change text, images, and buttons dynamically.
- Work with hotspots. Add, hide, or change navigation points based on user actions.
- Integrate external services. Connect maps, forms, CRM actions, and other widgets.
- Create custom scenarios. For example, request a password before entering a zone or launch content when a visitor reaches a location.
- Automate routine actions. A few lines of code can replace repetitive manual work.
This turns the panorama into an interactive business tool rather than a standalone visual effect.

Why not Unity or Unreal Engine?
We do not use game engines for ordinary 360° panorama projects because they solve a different class of problem.
They are built for different tasks. Unity and Unreal are designed for games, simulations, and complex 3D applications. A 360° panorama is primarily a way to present a real space.
They are more expensive and slower. A professional panorama platform can produce a tour in hours or days. A custom game-engine project can take weeks or months and require specialist programming.
Branding still has to be built. In a game engine, interface components need to be designed and programmed. In a professional tour platform, ready-made components can be adapted to the brand.
Our expertise is different. We work at the intersection of design, publishing, branding, websites, and digital content. We create tours that feel like part of the brand, not like a game level.
| Criterion | Professional tour platform | Free tools | Unity / Unreal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Predictable software/project cost | Free software | Custom development |
| Timeline | Hours–days | Days with development | Weeks–months |
| Brand style | Ready components | Manual | Manual |
| Accessibility | Can be built in | Manual | Custom development |
| Code required | No, but API available | Often yes | Yes |
For us, a panorama is not a “wow effect.” It is an honest answer to the question: “Can I see what this really looks like?” Used for spectacle alone, it can distort expectations. Used for transparency, it builds trust.
